Red Chair Lecture at Russell Farm

Image
Russell Farm Art Center in Burleson, Texas invited me to present as part of their Red Chair Lecture Series . The team at Russell Farm was very thoughtful with the setup, decorations, and refreshments. I especially liked how the stage was set up. We were blessed with an interested and engaged audience in the old hay barn which is now lit up with festive lighting. The presentation covered a variety of wood carving topics including history, tools, techniques, and the value of art created in wood. The audience asked a number of great questions during the presentation and we continued the conversation over refreshments. After everyone had a chance to get something to eat and drink, we moved to the Charlie Boren art studio. Charlie's carving studio has been preserved and is still used for some events. We spent some time there discussing tools and teaching wood carving. In the same building as the carving studio, there is an exhibit of Charlie Boren's wood carving. Charlie was know

Late Nights at the DMA

Image
The Dallas Museum of art invited me to present at last Friday night's "Late Nights" event. The event celebrated the start of Hispanic Heritage Month and the life and work of Mexican American artist Octavio Medellín. During the evening, I had the opportunity to demonstrate carving, answer questions, and allow visitors to try their hand at carving. It was such a fun, full time, that I only managed to get photos before and after the event. Here is a photo of the demo setup in the Founder's room just prior to the event. Looks like the DMA managed to take some pictures, such as this photo found on this Facebook post .

North Texas Woodcarving Guild Show 2019

Image
Last weekend was the 2019 North Texas Woodcarving Guild Spring show at the Grapevine Convention Center. Attendance was up this year and there were many great works on display. I enjoy encouraging carvers and spreading interest in the art form. I spent most of the time answering questions about carving and providing some impromptu instruction. The side effect of so much activity is that I did not get many photos of all there was to see. One photo I did get was of Jody Webb's table with the three first place ribbons he won. Congratulations Jody! If you made it to the show, I'd love to hear your thoughts. If you did not make it, I hope to see you there next year.

North Texas Wood Carver's Guild Show 2014

Image
This weekend I had a great time at the North Texas Wood Carver's Guild Rhapsody in Wood show. I had the opportunity see a lot of great carvings and talk to a number of talented carvers as well as up and coming carvers. It is this time with people who share an interest in wood carving that I like best about the show. I really enjoy answering questions, demonstrating technique and learning new things. Below are some photos I took while there. Let me know your thought on the show, especially if you were there. This year I had the pleasure to share my table with Jody Webb. The three crosses on the right of the table are Jody's. Whittling contest On a final note, the show had to end early due to an unseasonal (for Texas) ice storm.

2011 North Texas Wood Carvers Guild Rhapsody in Wood Show

Image
This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending the 2011 Rhapsody in Wood Show & Sell put on by the  North Texas Wood Carvers Guild . I saw some great carvings, turnings, wood burnings and scroll saw work. The best part, however, was visiting with some very fine individuals. If you attended the show, let me know what you thought. If not, and you happen to be in the North Texas area on the first weekend of March 2012, I'd love to see you at the next Rhapsody in Wood show.

Merry Christmas 2009

Image
I wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. In honor of the occasion, Ricky Smith offered this picture of a Christmas ornament he carved based on a pattern by Joel Hull that appeared in the Fall 2003 issue of Wood Carving Illustrated. The snowman was painted by Claire McGough. Last week we had our annual Christmas party at class. Thanks to everyone that contributed to the great food and company. We even managed to get some work done. I pray that you all have a blessed and happy new year!

43rd International Wood Carvers Congress

If you can make it to Bettendorf, Iowa on June 25-28 2009, be sure to check out the 43rd International Wood Carvers Congress . The quality of carvings at this show is always excellent. There are some examples from prior shows on The Affiliated Wood Carvers site. I wish I could make it.

Carv-Fest '09

A couple of people (including Doug ) sent me links to the website for Carv-Fest '09 in Faribault, Minnesota. I don't think I'll be able to make it this year, but I especially enjoyed the videos they have featuring the various instructors. If you can make it to Carv-Fest, I'm sure it will be a great experience.

The 2008 International Woodcarvers Congress

The latest issue of Woodcarvers Online Magazine has some really great photos from the 2008 International Woodcarvers Congress in Davenport, Iowa. Check out all the photos of the winning carvings, exhibits and seminars.

NTWG Six Flags Show

Image
I ran across some pictures I took at the North Texas Woodcarvers Guild show at Six Flags mall about 9 years ago. Paul Wellborn showing some very nice carving. I also got a picture of Luise Duval with her display. And (of course) Danny Reb with his carvings and carving supplies.
